Lately, my ears are glued to personal finance podcasts.

One of my favourites, David Ramsey, says this line often:

“Just because the economy is bad in your household doesn’t mean it’s bad in everyone’s.”

It’s one of those “tough love” statements that hits hard because it’s true. The market has changed over the past few years, and we’ve all seen longer sales cycles … but not everyone has adapted.

“Is it just me?”

Every week, I see two types of firms:

  1. One struggling to find leads.
  2. One fully booked.

Curiously, the struggling ones often say: “Business has slowed since 2023.”

With a bit of digging, many of them admitted they paused business development during the 2020–2022 renovation boom.

The busy firms, however, never stopped. They kept building their pipeline. Even when they didn’t need the work.

Habits of the Busy Firm

If you’ve felt the slowdown, you’re not alone. The economy has certainly changed, but you can’t “wait and hope” things will get better. This is the new normal.

To stay booked, commit to the habits of the “busy firm”:

  • Show up: Attend 1–2 events a month or stay in touch with your network.
  • Stay top-of-mind: Send a regular newsletter.
  • Be visible: Post on LinkedIn 3–5 times a week.
  • Track inputs: Measure meetings, not just revenue.

Do this for six months, and things will start to feel more predictable.

Because sometimes it’s not just the economy. The economy sets the conditions, but your habits and responsiveness decide how you perform inside them.
