Quick Summary
More people are starting to use AI tools alongside Google to find businesses. But the way they search is different. Instead of short keywords, they describe situations and preferences. This post explores how to show up in ChatGPT through a real classroom conversation that highlights how nuanced AI searches can be. When people ask for architects, designers, or contractors who understand specific needs, AI looks for clear signals about expertise and positioning. Understanding this shift can help businesses stay visible as AI search becomes part of how clients shortlist firms.

Every once in a while, I guest lecture at local colleges. Curious, I recently asked the students if they use AI search or Google.
Their answer? Both, depending on what it is.
One student explained, “When I went to Amsterdam, I wanted to go to a club for people who looked like me: Black. So I asked ChatGPT because I knew Google couldn’t tell me something like that.”
Why Not Google?
Google is built to rank websites. But AI search tools are much better at interpreting nuanced, personal context.
That student wasn’t just looking for “best clubs in Amsterdam.” She was looking for a very personalized recommendation.
For the Construction & Design Industry
When someone asks ChatGPT:
- “I’m looking for an architect who understands multigenerational homes.”
- “Find me a local interior designer who can balance historical exteriors with modern interiors.”
- “I want to build a daycare in Texas, and I need a contractor. Who do you recommend?”
They’re not just searching for a service. They’re looking for someone who gets them.
Here’s the thing:
A lot of these prompts are hard to reduce to 2–3 keywords. Because they’re not really keywords. They’re scenarios. Which is why we opt for AI, not Google, for these searches.

How do you navigate this shift?
In tomorrow’s workshop, Get Clients Using Google and AI SEO, I’ll answer:
- Can you track keywords in AI?
- How do you know if you’re showing up?
- How do you measure AI traffic?
- Can you influence how you appear?
If AI is shaping how people shortlist firms, it’s worth knowing how it works … and what you can do about it.
The workshop is tomorrow. Join us while there’s still space!
See you need week,
