Quick Summary

Niching down is one of the fastest ways to grow inquiries, but only if it is a real niche. This post shows how to niche down in a way that makes people instantly understand what you are the go-to firm for. We break down the difference between vague labels (like “female-owned” or “modern living”) and focused positioning tied to a specific service and client type. You will also get a simple niche test to try on your own business, plus real examples of designers and builders who doubled leads after tightening their niche.

You can double your inquiries in a year. People ask if that’s really possible. And it is.

But it takes two ingredients:

  1. Niche down so the right people instantly understand what you do.
  2. Show up consistently so those same people keep seeing you.

Let’s talk about the first one: niching down.

Many design and construction firms think they already have a niche (or are afraid to choose one… a topic for another day), but what they describe is often too vague.

This is NOT a niche:

  • Female-owned construction firm.
  • Architects for “modern living.”
  • General contractor for residential and commercial projects.

They describe what you are, not what you’re a go-to for.

This is a niche:

See the difference?

These companies stand out. They’re easier to find, easier to remember, and easier to choose.

If you’re not sure about your niche, here’s a quick test.

Finish this sentence… my company is the go-to firm for [specific service] in [place] for [specific type of client].

f your answer is fuzzy or broad, your niche needs tightening.

This year, here are three clients we’ve helped double their leads doing just that:

  • Lorla Studio – From 23 → 51 → 87 annual inquiries as “modern residential interior designer in Washington, DC.”
  • Callaway Childcare Construction – From 4 → 10 annual inquiries for “childcare construction in Texas.”
  • Merrit Design Co – From 4 → 30 annual inquiries for “coastal residential interior designer in South Florida.”

Next week, I’ll send my final newsletter of 2025 before the Findable team, and I will be out of the office for the holidays.
